2011 ~ A year of Maisie

IMG_4916[3] JanJanuary brought a lot of snow here in the south and Maisie and her friends enjoyed an extended snowcation as Atlanta was essentially shut down for over a week because the roads were impassable with built up ice and snow.  During the snow break Maisie had fun painting & baking, throwing snowballs, playing in igloos, warming up with loaded hot cocoa, dressing up and playing Wii.  Maisie also have a fun trip with friends to the Fernbank Museum followed by lunch at The Varsity.  It was then welcome, warm and fun to head down to Florida as Maisie and her schoolmates attended classes at Disney as part of their Youth Education Series.

IMG_5252[3] feb February was a busy month with multiple birthday parties, Valentine’s and Chinese New Year celebrations with neighbors, friends and at school.  There were also play dates with friends, lunch with others and even a school field trip to a fire station.  For a short month it was packed with fun.

IMG_5636[3] March March was spent playing with friends, being a fairy, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, making Leprechaun hat treats for her classmates, doing puzzles and taking Chinese dumpling and calzone cooking classes.  Another super fun and busy month for one very happy and energetic little girl.

IMG_58971 April brought Spring Break which meant a bowling play dateplaytime with friends, time at the gym, lunch and special treats with Mom and the highlight of her week, visiting the stable where she would attend horseback riding camp.  Maisie also got crafty and made some gorgeous silk dyed Easter eggs and then attended our neighborhood Easter egg hunt.  After her break she was ready to return to school but not to an outbreak of lice.  She did though enjoy baking special Easter bunny cupcakes for her classmates.  To finish out her fun and busy month Maisie  spent a day with the big sisters, always a fun time.  Something very memorable for me in April was, Maisie and I were walking through a store and for the first-time-EVER she asked for toy so I had to buy it for her.  The toy was her horse Sparkles and though she’s never really attached to or enjoyed playing with any toy, she has spent many, many hours playing with her horse Sparkles.

IMG_7482e[3] May was yet another fun and busy month.  Maisie and I worked in the kitchen as we made dumplings so to keep her favorite treat in the freezer.  Maisie was finishing up first grade and was the homework queen.  She loved her teacher Miss Lisa and so for Teacher Appreciation Day she made a cute teacher gift.   Maisie kept busy with gymnastics, field day and a fun final school field trip with her classmates.  In May Maisie attended two banquets, one for her Chinese big sisters and the other with her gymnastics teammates.  Once school ended Maisie helped plant the garden had fun attending a teammate’s birthday party, enjoyed super fun & long play dates and kept herself busy at home doing and enjoying summer bridge books

IMG_8474e[3] June was a month of camps.  First was gymnastics team camp then VBS and finally horseback riding camp. We traveled to Florida to celebrate Grandma & Grandpa’s 50th Anniversary and though she starting out being sick she still managed some fun times.  June also included lots of time at the pool having fun with friends and learning from the lifeguard how to test the water.   Gymnastics, play dates and a birthday party rounded out yet another busy month.

IMG_8874e[2] July was a hot month and the last month of summer vacation so we made the most of it with plenty of time playing in the pool and even quiet lounging in the pool.  Maisie also hibernated from the heat when needed so we did projects together like baking, baking some more and even no-baking cookies.  At gymnastics Maisie worked on her routines and mastered her mill circle, which she had been working on and was desperate to learn.    Maisie had pretzel & pottery painting, play doh, day at the barn and just fun and acting silly play dates.  Maisie found different and unique ways of sitting and relaxing.  To finish the month Maisie had a mock meet at gymnastics where she totally rocked the mock and finally a fun dinner with friends.

IMG_9476e[1] By the beginning of August Maisie was missing school and decided to become my teacher.  At the gym she was invited to start TOPs training which she just adored.  She attended a friend’s bowling birthday party and kept us entertained with her piano.  Maisie discovered a new love for bacon and being my little girly girl she also discovered make-up.  Maisie was amazed with some late night dining right before her first day of second grade.  We did have some rough sleep but thankfully it wasn’t long lived.  Maisie had a blast at her first USA Level 3 meet of her competitive season, Summer Fun Meet and afterwards dinner at the Diner.  We got crafty making Sharpie t-shirts and she ended the month attending a teammate’s birthday party.  Busy and fun, the life of Maisie.

IMG_0789e2 (1) September started with a fun science project as Maisie wanted to see if she could grow gummy bears.  She then competed at the Cobb Kick Off where she had a great meet.  Maisie and I shared special Wednesday afternoons where we did pottery painting together and we also enjoyed a stay in our p.j’s & cooking day.  Fun times as she had playtime with friends and then competed at her third meet of the season, Metro Retro.  After all the busy times it was nice to finish the month with a relaxing cruise

IMG_1751e1[1] In October we met some new friends as we went up to Tennessee for Maisie’s first travel meet where she rocked the Wilderness.  Maisie turned six and enjoyed some wonderful birthday celebrations, cupcakes with both her Level 3 and TOPs teammates as well as a pottery painting with her girlfriends and to finish her birthday celebrations, her favorite dim sum meal with Mama & Baba and then a science party at school.  At the gym Maisie hurt her back doing dozens of back handsprings but managed to Rock Roswell, her final meet of the year before States.  Maisie had fun at home when she got crafty and then made her first caramel apples.  Maisie had a blast when she performed gymnastics at her school’s fall festival with two of her other school & gym mates.  We ended the month with our traditional and always fun trip with friends to the maize maze followed by a Halloween party and of course, Trick or Treating.

IMG_2428e[1] In November Maisie was a little socialite attending multiple parties where she sipped fancy drinks and ate great food.  At home she had fun as she learned to made pottery instead of just painting it.  Poor little girl had to endure multiple dentist appointments but she was a trooper.  Maisie qualified for and competed in the USA Level 3 State Meet where once again she had a blast.  We found out that Maisie is allergic to wheat, dairy and egg whites so we found a new way of cooking and baking allowing her to feel better. Girls having fun play dates, a letter from Santa and a new scooter rounded out November.

five years a family December seemed to fly by as Maisie enjoyed time with teammates and enjoyed her fifth year in Aruba.  While in Aruba we celebrated our five year Gotcha/Family Day and then returned home in time to celebrate Christmas Eve with friends and a quiet Christmas day at home.

2011 was a great year for Maisie and all of us and we’re looking forward to more fun and interesting times in 2012.

Since this is an all about Maisie post I’m posting her favorite recipe of 2011 from Cook Lisa Cook which was Spicy Brown Sugar Bacon and luckily for her, it’s “Maisie safe” so she can continue to enjoy it.  Just click on the picture to be taken to the recipe:

Maisie & Brooke, busy & strong girls

Maisie’s classmate and fellow gymnast Brooke came to play today.  Five and a half hours and the two of them barely stopped their gymnastics and running around, they had so much fun together.

IMG_2838eThis picture proves that they did stop and sit for a couple of minutes…and trust me, it was only a couple of minutes before they were up and moving again.

IMG_2840eThey barely made a dent in their popcorn before the gymnastics resumed.

After their snack they decided to take turns doing some exercises on the bar.  Over and over they lifted and contorted as only gymnasts can do.

IMG_2868eIMG_2869eIMG_2870eIMG_2871eIMG_2872eIMG_2873eOver and over… And then it was Brooke’s turn.

IMG_2861eIMG_2862eThey had smiles on their faces and made it look so easy…my body hurts just from watching them!

While the girls played, I cooked.  That recipe will hopefully be coming soon as I have yet to upload the pictures and write the post.  I’m so far behind and in fact have quite a backlog of half written recipe posts for Cook Lisa Cook but yesterday I did get a new one completed and posted so check it out.  Potato Crusted Pork Chops are not only delicious but there’re super simple to make and “Maisie safe.”  Just click on the picture for the recipe.

Christmas 2011

IMG_2759e Maisie awoke very excited this morning hoping that Santa brought her the one and only gift that she asked for and wanted, a locked diary.

IMG_2761eMaisie really never asks for anything and in her mind thought that she would get her diary from Santa and that would be her gift so she was surprised to see, what to her, seemed like so many gifts under the tree.

IMG_2768eMaisie was delighted with what Santa delivered, a perfectly pink locked diary.  I know that it looks sparse under the tree and like we’re Scrooge but Maisie honestly does not want things and rarely plays with toys so it’s difficult to find gifts for her.

IMG_2769eThough she didn’t want anything beyond the diary, such a good girl couldn’t just get one gift for Christmas so she also received a new leotard, some fun “girly” things, perfume, lotion & lip gloss as well as some “Maisie safe” candy.  Maisie adores Barbie Movies so she received three, Barbie in the Nutcracker, Barbie: A Perfect Christmas and Barbie in A Christmas Carol.  Yes she loves Barbie movies but can’t be bothered with the dolls…or any doll for that matter.  Her final present was a gift certificate for a series of horseback riding lessons which I am going to take with her.  Maisie loved all her gifts but her favorite and the only one she’s been playing with all morning is her locked diary.

It was a nice Christmas morning and we’re looking forward to a relaxing day and hopefully what will be a delicious Christmas dinner.  Hope that everyone celebrating is having a wonderful Christmas.

A big thank you too for all the wonderful cards, pictures and family updates which were sent to us.  We love seeing, reading and displaying every single one and maybe one of these years I’ll get my act together and get some cards out…yes I say this each and every year…

Served last night at our Christmas Eve dinner and leftovers will be served with our dinner today were my favorite and totally awesome Hasselback Potatoes with Garlic Sour Cream.  Click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

Christmas Eve with Maya

This afternoon Maya and her parents picked up Maisie and they headed down to their Church for a Christmas service and concert.  They then came back to our home where we all enjoyed a delicious Christmas Eve dinner together.

IMG_2740eMaisie and Maya had a blast playing together, running around and being silly.  After dinner they each opened a little gift and then ran off to play some more.

IMG_2748e The girls would have played all night as they didn’t want the evening to end.  It was a really nice dinner and evening for all.  Our evening ended quite a bit later than we had planned, a couple hours after Maisie’s bedtime so we quickly hurried her to bed totally forgetting to leave cookies for Santa and carrots for the reindeer…oh well we’ll leave extra next year.  Maisie was fast asleep within minutes and hopefully she’s having sweet dreams and looking forward to Christmas morning.

Our meal was totally delicious and one of our side dishes was Creamed Corn with Cheese and Cilantro.  I made this recipe back a few weeks ago and after I licked the bowl clean all I could do was think about when I would make it again because it was off the charts wonderful.  I figured that it would be a perfect side for our Christmas Eve dinner and let me say, it was a huge hit.  Just click on the picture for the recipe.

Fun times with friends on the beach

This is my final Aruba post for this year.  Even though they’ve been light on words and truly not that many pictures either, it’s taken me weeks to get them all done but I had to get the pictures and posts all up because they’re such great memories and this is my scrap book for Maisie.

Every year we look forward to seeing our friends Sandy, Alan and Carl on the beach and it’s lonely and doesn’t seem right when they’re not there as they generally leave a number of days before we return home.  Maisie loves that each day they bring a special little candy treat for her and she adores going off with Sandy to put aluminum can pop-top tabs into Aloo.  (Maisie and Sandy collect aluminum can pop-top tabs all year and bring them to Aruba as the towel lady collets them in “Aloo” a bear shaped container.  The tabs are used as a fundraiser for sick children in Aruba.)

Each year I like to get a picture of Maisie with our friends and we’re looking forward to hopefully seeing them again next December.

Maisie’s already talking about and looking forward to going to back to Aruba next year.  Unfortunately it may only be another few years that we’re able to go in December and not because of school but because of gymnastics.  Once Maisie gets to the higher levels her competition season will change.  Instead of meets starting in August and ending by the first week in December, her competition season will start in December and we won’t be able to get away, thus no Aruba.  We’ve enjoyed our years there (so far 23 for me, 6 for Eammon and 5 for Maisie) and we’ll continue to do so for as long as we’re able.  Then poor Grandpa will have to eat his breakfast alone and take his walk without a little jumpy girl, we’ll celebrate our Gotcha/Family Day in a different place, the birds will have to find another patient little girl to feed them and we’ll have to make other arrangements to meet up with our friends.

Another thing that we’ll miss is dining at some great restaurants like my favorite, Madam Janette and Eammon’s fave, Iguana Joe’s.  Guess I’ll have to cook up something wonderful, turn on the ceiling fan and pretend we’re feeling the warm trade winds as we dine.

Neither Arubian nor Caribbean but it’s easy, “Maisie safe” and delicious, Potato Crusted Pork Chops, my newest recipe posted over on Cook Lisa Cook.  Just click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.
