Tumbling with Taylor as she turns 6

Sunday afternoon Maisie attended Taylor’s 6th birthday party.  Taylor is one of Maisie’s gymnastics teammates who like Maisie, loves gymnastics, so it was no wonder that she chose the gym to celebrate her birthday.  Maisie was thrilled to attend a party at her “happiest place on earth” and of course celebrate with her friend.

IMG_0283TEAfter their time playing in the gym all the party participants gathered together for a picture with their medals.

Sharpie tie-dye t-shirt craft

For quite some time I’ve seen Sharpie tie-dye projects all over the web and I’ve wanted to do it with Maisie.  Finally last Friday we had a morning off together so I gathered all the supplies and Maisie and I spent some time doing a craft.

IMG_0157eThe supplies consist of colored Sharpie markers, something like a t-shirt that you want to tie-dye, a piece of cardboard to place behind the work surface so it doesn’t bleed through to the back of the shirt, rubbing alcohol and an eye dropper or something to dispense the alcohol.

IMG_0160eUsing the markers, make designs with little dots of color.

IMG_0164eOnce you have all the designs you desire you’re ready for the magic.   Maisie’s shirt before we dripped the rubbing alcohol onto the designs.

IMG_0162eI made a shirt too.

IMG_0166eUsing an eye dropper, into the center of each circle or design we dripped some rubbing alcohol and watched as the colors of the design spread.

IMG_0167eThe colors will spread as far as the alcohol goes out.  I couldn’t find any cardboard so I had a doubled over brown paper grocery bag in the shirt but next time I’ll make sure to have something flatter like the cardboard so that the designs flow a bit more evenly.  We also learned which colors we liked and how the different colors flowed and how dark or light they looked so next time we can plan our designs a bit more.  Still a very fun and colorful shirt.

IMG_0169eI actually liked my shirt better before we let the colors flow but Maisie just thought this one was beautiful and asked if she could have it too.  So “my” shirt is now Maisie’s newest nightgown.   I hung the shirts to allow the alcohol to dry completely and then washed the shirts separately in cold water to set the design.

This was a cheap, fun and not messy project that we both really enjoyed and Maisie asked right away if we could do it again another day.  The t-shirts were on sale at Michael’s last week @ 2/$5 so I picked up a few more and the next time Maisie and I feel like doing a craft we’ll have all the supplies.

No new recipe tonight so I’m just going to tempt you with a delicious one from the past, Rum Cured Salmon Summer Rolls.  Click on the picture to see all the details and the recipe.IMG_8470

So easy

The other day at the gym new leotards were being put out in the pro-shop and Maisie spotted one that she really liked.  I thought it adorable too so Maisie now has a new leo.IMG_0175eMaisie wore it Friday to practice and then asked that I wash it Friday night as she wanted to wear it again Saturday morning for her TOPs practice.  Sparkly pink velvet and zebra, no wonder she loves it.

photo (5)eMaisie absolutely adores TOPs practice and Saturday morning I just had to snap a picture of her practicing oversplits as she always makes them look so easy.  She says it’s easy, fun & comfortable…I say, to each their own!

Easy, fun and comfortable for me is spending time in the kitchen cooking delicious food especially if it’s something like Mulligatawny soup which warms you body and soul.  Totally delicious and comforting.  Click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

And I thought it was August

Wait it is still August yet look what greeted me when I went into Hobby Lobby this morning.

photo (8)eChristmas seems to come earlier and earlier every year as there were almost a dozen isles chockablock with everything Christmas.  Even crazier were all the giddy people already stocking up for the holiday and shoot, the stuff wasn’t even on discount.  Yep, I’m one of those after Christmas on deep discount buy it and put it away for next year people.

Nope, not buying any Christmas stuff or even thinking about Christmas or holiday cooking or baking but if you are, maybe a gorgeous Spice Rubbed Turkey with Cognac Gravy is what you’re craving.  Click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.Spice Rubbed Turkey with Cognac Gravy While checking out the turkey please also take a look at some of my other recipes posted on Cook Lisa Cook including: Mango Lassi, Stir-Fried Asparagus with Water Chestnuts, Ginger & Cashews, Curried Roast Chicken Pieces with Spicy Sweet Potato & Carrots, Grilled Corn & Bacon Pudding, Oriental Chicken Salad, Potato Salad with Bacon, Coffee Crusted Steak, Home Style Chicken Curry, Watermelon FrostyMango Gazpacho, Toll House Double Stuff Oreo Brownies, Long Beans with Walnuts, Blacksmith Pizza, Rhubarb Crisp, Laksa, Math Book No Bake Cookies, Aloo Gobi, Mint Lassi, Red Curry Chicken, Lamb Curry, Grilled Corn, Avocado & Tomato Salad with Honey Lime Dressing, Baked Egg Cups Two Ways, Thai Peanut Salad, Holy Guacamole, Cantaloupe Agua Fresca, Wallaby Darned, Piggy-Out Cookies, Wicked Good New England Lobster Roll, Long Beans with Garlic, Super Simple Summer Shrimp Salsa Salad, Grandma’s Teriyaki Steak, Watermelon Tomato Gazpacho, Red Chinese Long Beans with Peppers & Red Curry, 24-Layer Crêpe Cake Fig & Watermelon Salad, Grilled Chèvre & Fig Panini, Spicy Asian Cucumber Salad, Grilled Prawns, Spicy Brown Sugar Bacon, Kicked Up Piggy-Out Cookies, Pesto Pita Pizza, Cilantro Lime Chicken, Nutella Crêpes, Mango, Lime & Chile Spiced Ice Box Pie and Roast Beef & Garlic Herb Cheese Sandwich.

Her own special ingredient

I just posted about a really wonderful and delicious Roast Beef and Garlic Herb Cheese Sandwich over on Cook Lisa CookMaisie loves the roast beef and the garlic herb cheese but she adds her own special touch to make the sandwich her own.

IMG_0149eMaisie says that adding potato chips makes her sandwich more delicious and she likes the crunch.

IMG_0153eBakery fresh thin-sliced sourdough bread spread with homemade garlic herb cheese, super thin slices of rare deli roast beef and Maisie’s special ingredient, potato chips.

A-Maisie-ing me all the time

Exercise:  In your journal, write a paragraph summarizing what you learned last week.

IMG_9984eSo what did my five year old write?

IMG_0073e “Last week I learned two new things.  These things are intirrogative and diclaritive.  Intirogetive is a fancy word for a question mark.  Declaritive is a fancy word for a period.  I use these words in Shurley English.”

I can guarantee that at fifteen five I didn’t know that interrogative or declarative were even real words.  My girl is one little smarty.

One thing I knew at five and still know today is good food.  Though I don’t have a new recipe today, check out these gorgeous little bites of deliciousness.  Just click on the picture to find out what they are and to be taken to the recipe.Zucchini Lemon Cookies

Look familiar?

Each morning before school Maisie goes to where we keep her school uniforms and chooses what she wants to wear for the day.  My only input is in letting her know if she needs to wear a short or long sleeved shirt and because everything matches I don’t worry about what she chooses.  No muss, no fuss, no fighting and our mornings go well.

IMG_0014E Today Maisie was quite delighted with her choice of clothes and asked me if I remembered when she first wore her watermelon skirt (because of the two little watermelon slices at the waist.)  I pretended not to remember.  In a completely exasperated voice Maisie reminded me that she wore this skirt on her first day of Kindergarten

IMG_6405b a Maisie has grown quite a bit in two years so the skirt is shorter on her but at least the waist finally fits her properly.

In other new, the steroids and antibiotics kicked in and about 11am today it dawned on me that I no longer had razor blades in my throat when I swallowed, yeah!  So I think and hope that both Maisie and I will be feeling 100% very soon.

I finally got a new recipe up over on Cook Lisa Cook for a Mango, Lime & Chile Spiced Ice Box Pie.  I know that it sounds a bit different but it was truly delicious and perfect on a hot summer day as there’s no cooking or baking involved.  Mango Lime Chili PieDoesn’t this just look cool, creamy and delicious!

Proud little gymnast

photo (5)eMaisie stopped today after her practice to have her picture taken in front of the 9.0 board.  At Maisie’s gym after each meet they post the names and scores, by level, of all the gymnasts who attain a 9.0 or better.  Maisie was very proud to have her name on the board for Saturday’s Summer Fun Meet(She wishes that her name was spelled properly but still proud to be there.)

While Maisie was at the gym for her practice I was at urgent care.  I haven’t been feeling well for a couple of days and have been running a low-grade fever.  By this afternoon my fever was no longer low-grade, my ears and head were killing me and I couldn’t swallow without it feeling like razors in my throat.  photo (1)I had a long wait for the lone doctor and was bored so I snapped a picture of myself.  The really sad part about this picture is that as cr@ppy as I look and as bad as the picture is, both are way better than how I was actually feeling.  I’m hopeful that when I wake tomorrow after today’s breathing treatment, shot of prednisone and the first two pills of a Z-Pak I’ll have a bit of energy and be feeling a lot better.

Now on to something a whole lot better looking than my mug, a bit of food p0rn to tempt you to make something delicious.  Cheaters Chicken SoupSince I'm sick and it hurts to swallow some Cheaters Chicken Soup is just what the doctor ordered…well that and a lot of drugs.  Click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

If soup isn’t what you’re craving, no problem, just check out some of my other recipes posted on Cook Lisa Cook including: Mango Lassi, Stir-Fried Asparagus with Water Chestnuts, Ginger & Cashews, Curried Roast Chicken Pieces with Spicy Sweet Potato & Carrots, Grilled Corn & Bacon Pudding, Oriental Chicken Salad, Potato Salad with Bacon, Coffee Crusted Steak, Home Style Chicken Curry, Watermelon FrostyMango Gazpacho, Toll House Double Stuff Oreo Brownies, Long Beans with Walnuts, Blacksmith Pizza, Rhubarb Crisp, Laksa, Math Book No Bake Cookies, Aloo Gobi, Mint Lassi, Red Curry Chicken, Lamb Curry, Grilled Corn, Avocado & Tomato Salad with Honey Lime Dressing, Baked Egg Cups Two Ways, Thai Peanut Salad, Holy Guacamole, Cantaloupe Agua Fresca, Wallaby Darned, Piggy-Out Cookies, Wicked Good New England Lobster Roll, Long Beans with Garlic, Super Simple Summer Shrimp Salsa Salad, Grandma’s Teriyaki Steak, Watermelon Tomato Gazpacho, Red Chinese Long Beans with Peppers & Red Curry, 24-Layer Crêpe Cake Fig & Watermelon Salad, Grilled Chèvre & Fig Panini, Spicy Asian Cucumber Salad, Grilled Prawns, Spicy Brown Sugar Bacon, Kicked Up Piggy-Out Cookies, Pesto Pita Pizza, Cilantro Lime Chicken & Nutella Crêpes.

She can’t get enough

Saturday after Maisie’s competition and then TOPs practice Maisie was tired, more so mentally than physically but enough so that she got a good nights sleep, YEAH!  Saturday was such a long day of concentrating and being very focused it was good that Sunday was just a quiet day at home for us.  We spent the morning and into the early afternoon in our p.j’s, playing together and watching…are you ready for this…gymnastics.

IMG_9980eMaisie is NOT a television watcher and easily goes days and days without turning on the t.v., watching a show, movie or video but I knew that she’d love watching the “big” girls compete at the 2011 Visa Championships so I recorded it for her.  Maisie really enjoyed watching the gymnastics and couldn’t get enough but she was funny.  Maisie would watch for a while, hit the pause button, run off and try a few skills, sit back down, rewind, watch some more, pause, run off, do some more gymnastics, return, repeat, rewind.  Never one to sit still for very long, Maisie enjoyed her time and I was tired just watching her.

Maisie already has a dream and says that she wants to do what the big girls do, compete on television and go to the Olympics.  I have to say that she loves the sport, being at the gym and doing the work.  With Maisie, the tougher it gets the more she pushes and enjoys the challenge.  She is one driven little 5 year old and as long as she loves it, is doing it in a safe way, is a good girl and keeps her grades up in school…she’ll be doing gymnastics for as long as she chooses.

Now on to food!  I have some new recipes for Cook Lisa Cook but I have to get my posts written and pictures together.  So to tempt you for now, here’s a little food p0rn of one of my favorite desserts.  Click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.
