Halloween through the years

I saw that Lisa did a post of Briana’s Halloween costumes through the years and I thought, what a great idea and I should do the same look back at Maisie’s costumes.  By doing so I realized that I am a total looser Mom when it comes to Halloween and costumes.  To prove this point, here are the pictures.

Year:  2007

Yep, see that big blank space above, well that’s because we did NOTHING!  No cute little baby costume, no trick or treating, we just turned off the lights, got in bed early and totally ignored the holiday.

Year:  2008

I did a little better this year as we actually had the cutest little giraffe costume for Maisie .IMG_4014[3]Isn’t she the most adorable little giraffe?  Well it’s good that I got this picture because come Halloween…

IMG_4412[3]My poor little girl wasn’t feeling all that well and had no interest in dressing up or even participating in the holiday.

Year:  2009

Yep, total loser Mom again as I didn’t take even one stinking picture.  I can tell you that Maisie went trick or treating dressed as a gymnast but which leotard she wore…if I had a picture I’d remember….LOSER Mom!!

Year:  2010

This year I tried to make up for all my shortcomings from years past when it came to Halloween so not only did I get Maisie dressed up but I dressed up too!IMG_3526[2]I was really trying and given the fact that I allowed this picture to be taken AND I actually posted it…well that’s worth some brownie points…right??

Year:  2011

This year I had three costumes available for my sweetie girl.

So which did she choose for trick or treating tonight?

IMG_1960eFrench Princess Maisie doing her curtsey.  It was chilly tonight so her costume was layered over tights & leggings on the bottom and a fleece & long sleeved shirt on top.

photo e Maisie had fun running around trick or treating with some of the neighbors.

photo (1)e Every time she got a really good candy she had to run and show me.  Maisie had good fun but by 7PM she was done and asking to go home.  My little sweetie ate one candy and was sound asleep by 7:30.

In the spirit of Halloween (see, I’m trying) for dinner tonight I made Mummy Hotdogs for Maisie and Eammon and they both really enjoyed them.  IMG_1916e Maisie especially enjoyed biting off the Mummy’s head and dipping it in ketchup blood…YUM!  Click on the Mummy Hotdog picture above to be taken to the recipe. Neighborhood Halloween Party

Yesterday was a busy day with TOPs practice in the morning followed by fun times at our neighborhood Halloween party.  Our neighbors who plan and donate their time for our neighborhood parties always do a fabulous job and kids and parents alike always have fun.  Last year was our first year attending the Halloween party and Maisie had a blast so she was looking forward to this year.  After a bit of back and forth on costume choices she finally decided on the French Princess costume because I could easily layer shirts, tights and leggings under it so to keep her warm on a sunny but chilly day.

IMG_1596eMaisie visited the fortune teller.

IMG_1597eShe was amazingly accurate in all her predictions.

IMG_1603eThere were hula hoop and other contests for young and old alike.

IMG_1604ePlenty of games to entertain the children and of course where they could win prizes.

IMG_1607eMaisie really enjoyed the pumpkin painting station.

The one unfortunate part of the afternoon was the cold which got into all our bones so after winning a GiGi’s cupcake and some chocolate finger pretzels at the cake walk, Maisie decided she was really cold and wanted to return home.  Overall it was good party and a fun afternoon.

Once we returned home Maisie changed into her Harujuku cutie outfit and we went out for dinner.  Since I didn’t end up cooking and because of the very cold weather we’re experiencing I’m featuring a delicious soup recipe, Roasted Poblano Corn Chowder which will not only heat you up from the hot soup but also from the heat of the peppers.  Just click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

Beautiful French Princess

IMG_1593eYesterday Maisie was a Harajuku cutie and today she chose to wear her new French Princess costume…well at least around the house.  We’ll have to see what she chooses for the Halloween party she’s attending later this afternoon.  So fun being six!

Yesterday I posted my “Rotisserie” Chicken recipe and today I’ve posted another wonderful way to use some the chicken, in addition to my Cheaters Chicken Soup, Fire Roasted Tomato and Chicken Tortilla Soup and Oriental Chicken Salad.  Today’s recipe is for Pulled BBQ Chicken Sandwiches and just click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

Harajuku cutie

Maisie has not asked to dress up as anything special for Halloween which is good because a few months ago I ordered a few costumes/dress-up outfits for her off a clearance sale and tucked them away for Halloween.  Today I pulled them out and she was thrilled when she saw them.

IMG_1587eThis Harajuku cutie costume was the first one she wanted to try on and has been dancing around the house wearing it all morning.  We’re heading off to swimming followed by gymnastics and she has asked to wear her costume for everyone to see.  Oh the fun of being six!  I'm thrilled that she loves her costumes and I’m sure over the course of the weekend she’ll be switching between all three of her new outfits so more pictures to come.

New recipe over on Cook Lisa Cook for “Rotisserie” Chicken and wow is it ever delicious and versatile.  I love using “Rotisserie” Chicken when I make my Cheaters Chicken Soup which I use as the base for many of my soups including my Fire Roasted Tomato and Chicken Tortilla Soup.  Once you make and taste this chicken you’ll never go back to the store bought ones.  Click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

Fall Festival

IMG_1566e

Today was the Fall Festival at Maisie’s school.  The children enjoyed carnival games, candies, treats and face painting, it was good fun for everyone.  At the end of the festival two of the coaches from Maisie’s gym came so that Maisie and two of her schoolmates who also attend North Metro could do a gymnastics demonstration for the school.

IMG_1571eBrooke, Kaity & Maisie each performed their floor routine and then they each demonstrated a higher level skill which they have been working on.  For her skill Maisie did a round-off back handspring, a USA Level 4 skill.

IMG_1572eKaity, Brooke & Maisie after their demonstration.

When the coaches asked if there were any questions, one of the children asked if the girls could do splits.

IMG_1574eSplits are no problem.

IMG_1575e Easy peasy on the other leg too.

On the drive home I asked Maisie what her favorite part of the festival was, to which she replied, “doing the demonstration of course.”  I wasn’t surprised.

Today I am again featuring Maisie’s Caramel Apples because she was so pleased with her creations.  Today Maisie brought one in for her teacher Miss. Lisa, she donated one for the cakewalk at the Fall Festival and we have two remaining at home…still left to be eaten.  Maisie loves all the cooking together but then often she can’t be bothered to eat, maybe tomorrow we’ll give her apples a try.  Click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

Crafty in the kitchen making caramel apples

Today was another crafty day in the kitchen as my beautiful Maisie Miao Miao made caramel apples.

IMG_1559eFor Maisie it wasn’t about making a gorgeous homemade caramel or fancy ingredients, it was about the fun of being with Mom in the kitchen, dipping apples in caramel that tastes good to her and putting on lots of extra chocolate bits and nuts.  It was the fun of the activity that made my girl so happy

IMG_1537eMaisie decided that she wanted the apples rolled in a mix of semi sweet chips, cinnamon chips, white chocolate bits and milk chocolate bits along with some Winter Spiced Nuts, .

IMG_1543eMaisie debating about how many chips and nuts would really be needed on the apples as she performs a little quality control taste testing.

IMG_1544eMaisie carefully dipped the apples.

IMG_1546eThen she rolled it in the chip and nut mixture.

Getting flip-floppity crafty

Maisie and I recently got a bit crafty and all for less than $2.  In the 97cent bin at Jo-Ann’s I found a pair of cute flip flops and a flip flop decorating kit so Maisie and I played.

IMG_0606eI don’t think that the decorations will last all that long but it was a fun little craft and Maisie loves her new fancy flip flops.

New and wonderfully tipsy drink recipe over on Cook Lisa Cook, this time for a decadently delicious Thin Mint Irish Coffee.  With our recent temperature change turning quite cold at night, Eammon and I have enjoyed these wonderful drinks a few evenings thus far and I can see that they will be a favorite this winter.  Just click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

A-Maisie-ing(ly) Maisie Rocked Roswell!

If you read my last post where I talked about Maisie’s back injury this past week you know that I debated as to whether or not to have her compete with her team this weekend.  Then to further exacerbate the situation Maisie awoke around midnight saying that her throat hurt to swallow and she was running a low fever.  I gave her some Tylenol and thankfully she quickly and easily went back to sleep.  This morning she awoke on her own at 5am, without a fever and she wanted to attend the meet.  I was most concerned about her back but she said that it was feeling okay.  Just to make sure that her back was nice and loose I gave her a long hot bath followed by her dose of Motrin and then she wore the heat wrap while she ate and I did her hair.  By 7:15 Maisie was bathed, finished with breakfast, her hair was done, she was dressed in her competition leotard and warm-ups and we were heading out into the cold dark morning to the gym.

IMG_1367eMy gorgeous A-Maisie-ing Maisie!

The meet this morning was Roswell Gymnastics’ Trick or Treat Invitational and I’ll tell you, it was nice not to have far to travel to get to the gym.  Maisie was happy to be with her teammates and her throat and back seemed okay.

Maisie’s session was all USA Level 3 and there were a total of 40 gymnasts representing five gyms.  Maisie’s age group was comprised of three gyms but you couldn’t tell that from the awards as the Jr. A North Metro girls took every.single.medal!  Yay North Metro!!

IMG_1408eMaisie had fun at the meet and was quite thrilled with the trick-or-treat candies that she received at the awards ceremony.

I always stress but to say I held my breathe during todays meet would be an understatement as warm-ups for Maisie did NOT go well.  I could see that she just was off her game and vault especially seemed to be giving her the most difficulty, which is unusual.  Though once the meet started she pulled it out and did very well, surprisingly well considering this past week.  As always I’m super proud of my beautiful little gymnast.

IMG_1368eMaisie and teammate Mara before the meet.

Another shaky hand video of my girl but I adore watching her!

I realized that Maisie ended this meet with the exact same All-Around score as Freedom Fest, a 36.725 which earned her another first place All-Around finish.   Also like Freedom Fest, at this meet she had one first place, two second place and one fourth place finishes.  Bars remained her strongest event but for the first time ever she had to take a second go at the vault.  In the end though, my girl rocked!

Now for the obligatory hands in the air pictures and scores:

IMG_1378eBars:  First Place ~ 8.95

IMG_1381eBeam:  Second Place ~ 9.3

IMG_1386eFloor:  Second Place ~ 9.175

IMG_1371eVault:  Fourth Place ~ 9.3

IMG_1392eAll-Around:  First Place ~ 36.725

Congratulation Maisie and all the North Metro Girls, you Rocked Roswell!!  Now on to State Meet.

So, a very good day that we’re having and I even posted a new recipe over on Cook Lisa Cook.  This one is a lot healthier than my last few but just as delicious, in a different sort of way.  Click on the picture to learn how to make some totally awesome Roasted Cauliflower.
