My Utah bloggy pal Laurel left the following comment on my "Knackered & Angry Birds" post: “I tried angry birds the other day. I couldn't do it. Frustrated me. The kids seem to be able to do it. Kinda drives me crazy how those younger than us know more about that kinda stuff than we do.”
Her comment immediately made me think of a conversation Maisie and I had in the car last Thursday morning on the way to school.
Maisie: “Mama is d-i-r-i-g-i-b-l-e the way to spell dirigible?”
Me: “Ummmm…You know I’m not 100% sure but if you ask Miss. Lisa I’ll bet that she’ll look it up in the dictionary with you.” (Yeah, nice pass-off on my part while thinking oh-cr@p, not only is the girl’s math beyond mine but now so is her spelling.)
Maisie: “I think it’s d-i-r-i-g-i-b-l-e because even though it sounds like a ‘j’ it’s a ‘g’.”
Me: “You’re right, it is a ‘g’ but I’m not sure if it’s ‘ible’ or ‘able’ on the end.” Then to get her mind off the fact that I wasn’t 100% sure of the spelling I asked, “Maisie, do you know what a dirigible is?”
Maisie: (exasperated) “A blimp Mama, I saw one the other day.”
Once again, she told me. I did look up the word and I’ll be damned, the girl was 100% correct in her spelling.

Not only would I be clueless on that spelling, I hadn't the foggiest idea of what it meant. Sounded like math term to me. That Maisie is one smart little cookie. Wow!
ReplyDeleteLike Colleen, not only didn't I know how to spell it, I didn't have a clue what it meant either. Oh man....we're in big trouble! Did you know what dirigible meant?
ReplyDeleteGood grief - I had no idea what that word even meant! LOL!
ReplyDeleteWow - I didn't know that word! Maybe Maisie needs to come home school Rachel for me. What a smart girl!
