Surgery scheduled

IMG_3802eEammon has been away on a business trip all week so Maisie and I went real gourmet with our meals.  Honestly she just hasn’t been feeling great and has mostly wanted Cheaters Chicken Soup with rice noodles but I wanted her to have something more substantial so she put in a request for hotdogs and beans.  So some Maisie “safe” all-beef hotdogs and beans it was and she was a happy little girl.

IMG_3807eFirst I want to say thank you to everyone for your comments here on the blog, on FB and in emails regarding the problems with Maisie’s congestion and sinuses.  This afternoon we met with the ENT surgeon and she feels that our first course of action is to remove Maisie’s adenoids, get a culture of the infection in her sinuses and flush her sinuses.  She explained that even though Maisie’s adenoids look okay, they can harbor a lot of bacteria which could be contributing to her ongoing sinus infections.  She also wants to get a culture of the infection so that the correct antibiotic can be determined and maybe the flush of her sinuses will allow them a clean start.  She’s not ruling out sinus surgery but she feels that this “easier” surgery followed by the hopefully correct antibiotic may clear Maisie’s problem.  Because this coming week is spring break, surgeries have long been scheduled for this week and as it’s not an emergency, Maisie will have her procedure the following week so please send lots of good thoughts and wishes her way, they’re much appreciated.

As I mentioned above, Maisie hasn’t felt like eating much lately but she’s been loving my Cheaters Chicken Soup so if you’re not feeling well and need a fast, easy and delicious soup, click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

Infected...even worse :-(

photo (1)e(The Maisie pictures in this post have nothing to do with the post, they’re all just cell phone pictures which I’ve been meaning to post.)

This has been like a never ending bad ride trying to get to the root of Maisie’s nasal congestion and trying to make her feel better.  Maisie is up every.single.night, often for a few hours at a time because she’s so congested she just can’t breathe through her nose at all.  She amazes me though, the fact that she keeps up with her heavy gymnastics schedule, continues to be an ‘A’ student at school and is an all around good kid…though she does have her moments, I’m honestly surprised that they’re as far and few between as they are.

Maisie has had congestion problems forever and has been on allergy meds since she was a baby.  Back in November, just before Thanksgiving we found out that Maisie had some food allergies to wheat, egg whites & diary so we completely removed those items from her diet and that helped significantly with the congestion that was “up front” in her nose.  Inside, her nose had always been wet looking and blue but after removing the problem foods from her diet her nose dried up and it was a healthy looking pink inside.  Though her nose dried up she still had congestion but it wasn’t until the Wednesday before Christmas when it got really bad and her sleep, or “lack of sleep” problems began.

We visited Maisie’s Pediatrician the end of December and then because the meds she prescribed didn’t seem to help we had a return visit on January 20th.  The doctor was sort of at a loss as to what the problem was, thinking it may have been Maisie’s adenoids she sent her to an ENT.  Maisie saw the ENT on January 27th and he scoped her nose to find that her adenoids were small and perfect.  The ENT could hear Maisie’s congestions so he then sent us to an Allergist for further allergy testing.  That visit was on February 1st and Maisie was a trooper as they pricked her back and did the testing but no additional allergies were found.  The Allergist felt that it was a sinus problem so he arranged for Maisie to have a CAT scan which she had on February 8.  We had a follow-up visit with the Allergist on Valentine’s Day and with the CT scan results we found out that Maisie had a major infection in her sphenoid sinuses.  The doctor put her on a 28 day course of Augmentin and said that we should follow up with the ENT.  The Augmentin seemed to help a little, maybe 10%, so on March 16, three days after finishing the Augmentin Maisie returned to the ENT and he heard that she was still congested but he didn’t want her to have another CT scan so soon after finishing the antibiotic.  He put her on an antihistamine and a stronger nasal steroid and wanted to give that 30 days before doing a follow-up CT scan.

The follow up CT scan was scheduled for April 13th but each day since Maisie’s visit on March 16th I’ve noticed that Maisie’s congestion has gotten worse…and so has her sleep.  Monday I started calling the ENT’s office saying that she just couldn’t wait another three weeks for the CT scan and another week for the follow-up appointment, that it needed to be done ASAP.  I thankfully got through to a wonderful triage nurse, Shelley, who really helped me out.  After school today I took Maisie for her follow-up CAT scan.  We then took the disk of the scan down to Shelley at Children’s at Scottish Rite, the radiology place got a STAT report to her and she got the doctor to review everything.  From the time Maisie started her scan to Shelley calling me at home with the results was less than 2 hours.

photo (8)eLast Friday morning after practice Coach Hardy was chatting with us and Maisie decided that she wanted to snuggle into him, it was so cute I just had to snap a picture.  Maisie loves working with Coach Hardy.

Well I knew something was wrong and sure enough, the infection now is even worse than before she endured that course of Augmentin.  In fact it’s severe enough that they want Maisie to see a surgeon sooner than later.  They scheduled Maisie for an appointment on Friday with the surgeon and we’ll see what she has to say.  For now though the ENT has put Maisie 30 days of a new antibiotic, Omnicef and she’s back on a probiotic to help with the stomach side effects.  My poor little Maisie Miao Miao…now we wait to see what the surgeon says on Friday.

Maisie hasn’t wanted to eat much this week but last week she requested meatballs and I was happy to oblige.  These Baked Meatballs are Maisie’s favorite and the girl can easily down 6 to 8 at a go and I’m not even going to mention how many Eammon and I enjoy each time as these are really good.  Personally I enjoy a couple of them cold for breakfast but that’s my odd little thing.  Just click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

SEC Championship

photo eSaturday, Maisie and some of her gymnastics teammates had a grand time at the SEC Championship gymnastics meet.  The girls enjoyed being together, eating lots of treats, giggling, having five little bums squeezed into two seats, taking numerous trips to the restroom and even…watching some of the gymnastics.  Maisie decided that she wants to be a Gator and compete for Florida.  What did she base that on?  Well their capri warm-up pants and leotard of course!  At the end of the meet Maisie was delighted that “her” school won.

I noticed the other day that the fig tree in my neighbor’s yard was starting to leaf out so fig season isn’t far off, woohoo!  I can’t wait until we have both fresh figs and watermelon as I’m craving my Fig & Watermelon Salad, it’s been too long since I last enjoyed it.  Click on the picture for a great taste of summer.

Flowers for Lisa

photo (4)eI’m a bit behind in posting again as over a week ago Maisie and her classmates made flowers for their teacher Miss. Lisa.  I think that they all did a wonderful job.

I also made something special for Lisa, Slimmed Down Loaded Potato & Buffalo Chicken Casserole.  Lisa said that the healthier version of my Loaded Potato & Buffalo Chicken Casserole was absolutely delicious and that she and her girls polished off the entire casserole.  I hope that you’ll check out both versions of the recipe.  The picture below is of the Slimmed Down Loaded Potato & Buffalo Chicken Casserole so just click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

9369 ~ Seriously!!!

Yep, I’m complaining again as our pollen count is off the freakin’ charts.  On a scale where a count over 120 is considered extremely high with warnings of avoiding outdoor activity…well what do you do when the count is pushing 10,000?  I don’t even suffer from environmental allergies yet my eyes have been streaming, breathing is difficult and my head is just throbbing.  The pollen is crazy and no rain is in the forecast.  Just wondering if tomorrow we’ll break 10,000.

photo (2)aI mentioned previously that we were scheduled to see the ENT again regarding Maisie’s congestion.  That visit was last Friday and here she was being silly modeling for me as she waited for the doctor.  The doc looked at her CT scan and other than the infection in her sphenoid sinuses and some fluid in some of her other sinuses, he couldn’t detect anything obviously wrong.  Maisie had just finished her course of Augmentin a day or so before the visit so he didn’t want to immediately do another CT scan but instead has put Maisie on an antihistamine and a new steroid nasal spray and on April 13 she’ll have another CT scan to see if the infection and fluid are gone.

Oh, and the shorts she’s wearing we given to her by Caroline, one of the bigger girls she works out with at her gym.  They’re really cute and say “If Gymnastics were easy it would be called football.”  Maisie gets such a kick out of the saying.

Recently I was craving some Thai curry but I was too lazy to drive to my favorite place so I cooked at home and let me tell you, I rocked this recipe.  In addition I actually used a slow cooker  to make Slow Cooker Chicken Curry.  Using a crockpot is something I generally don’t do but it worked out wonderfully, the chicken was tender, moist and delicious and the sauce, well that was just gorgeous.  I will be making this recipe again and using the slow cooker too.  Just click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

Like sucking air through pea soup

I don’t even have environmental allergies but I can barely breathe and I’m ready to scratch my eyes out as the pollen count here in Atlanta is off-the-charts!

Pollen count for: Monday, March 19, 2012

Today's count is = 8164*

This is the highest pollen count on record for Atlanta.  Once the pollen count reaches 120 it’s said to be in the extremely high range so I’m saying that today’s count is in the outrageous-are-you-kidding-me range.  I mean seriously, if anything over 120* is considered extremely high we’re at extremely high times 68!  I just can’t get over the numbers as the count today blew away, by 35%, Atlanta’s previous high pollen count of 6,013 which set on April 12, 1999.  And because I remember it well, our third highest count of 5937 was set on March 29, 2007

I actually remember both of these previous records.  In 1999 I remember driving down the road and having the pollen swirl as if it were a dusting of snow on the road.  In 2007 Maisie and I had a busy week of play dates and though the pollen slowed us down we kept up with all our activities.  Here’s a picture of my sweet little Maisie Miao Miao from that week in 2007.

ZoodlesI love this picture of my serious little girl and I loved this outfit too.  I passed the outfit along to a bloggy friend and I sure hope that her little girl got to enjoy and wear it too.

And one more picture because Maisie was, and still is so stinkin’ adorable!Feb 27 2007 2Peek-a-boo my sweetie.

Maisie and I stopped at the store this afternoon and she spied one of her favorite foods which we really haven’t seen in a while, fresh corn.  Unfortunately it didn’t look all that wonderful so we passed on buying any but it sure got me thinking about corn and the delicious dish that I make, Creamed Corn with Cheese & Cilantro.  Thankfully I can make this dish anytime of the year with frozen corn but unfortunately because of Maisie’s allergies she can’t eat it any longer.  Guess I’ll be making this for Eammon and I and for Maisie, a nice big bowl of corn with Maisie “safe” buttery spread.  For this delicious corn recipe, just click on the picture.
