Maisie absolutely loves Gim (Korean roasted laver) and it’s one of those things that I always have in a container on my counter and she’s allowed to snack on it at will.
At home we enjoy the large sheets which we cut into smaller squares so that they’re easier to eat. The small packs I send with Maisie to school and the gym so she can enjoy them at snack time.
If you purchase the large sheets, here’s a little tutorial on how to “cut” the Gim into squares without opening the bag and creating a huge mess.On the back side of the package, lift the center seam.
Fold the still fully sealed package in half right along that center seam.
Press firmly along the entire length of the fold as this will “cut” the crisp Gim.
Unfold and then perpendicular to your first fold, divide the package in thirds. Fold the top third towards you and press firmly along the length of the fold.
Lay the package flat again and fold the bottom third away from you and again press firmly along the entire length of the new fold.
Still sealed package divided into six relatively equal parts.
Open the package and remove the “cut” squares of Gim. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
When do we eat Gim? Most of the time we all just snack on it like it was potato chips as it’s crisp and a bit salty so it satisfies that craving. We also wrap the Gim around rice which I guess is the traditional way to eat it.
Maisie likes making little “wrap sandwiches” with the Gim.
Maisie adds a little brown sushi rice and shrimp (or meat) to the square of Gim and folds it into a neat little package.
But she sure does love it and as it’s Maisie “safe” and a good vehicle for getting good carbs and protein in her, Gim is a winning snack in our home.
Eammon and I love Gim too and enjoying it with this Broiled Sushi is just perfect. Seriously though, how fun is sushi in casserole form and if you’re turning your nose up thinking sushi = raw fish well not in this dish, as there’s nothing raw, just wonderful flavors so give it a try.

Ro and Ree ADORE this stuff as well. I can't keep enough in the house. I wish I could let them eat as much as they wanted, but they'd go through 6 or 7 packs each in a day. As it is now, every time I go to the grocery store half my cart is Korean roasted seaweed and people stare at me. Hee!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know what laver is, but I know it would not pass for a snack in our house. Ew.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of Gim before, but it sure sounds like an interesting snack. I love the fact that it has protein.
ReplyDeleteLisa,
ReplyDeleteJust an FYI - some imitation crab meat does have wheat in it so you might want to check what you are using. Believe me, I know as I have to eat gluten-free. I do love your recipes!!!
Hi Kat, I have yet to find an imitation crab meat that does not include wheat so Maisie did not eat any of the grilled sushi, instead she ate brown rice with fresh steamed shrimp.
DeleteI don't know about Tim, but the girl and her owl PJs are awfully cute!
