School Easter egg hunt

Maisie and I are still enjoying spring break in Florida, sitting on the white sand in Naples and enjoying the warm gulf water.  A post about that is coming soon…hopefully soon.  As usual I’m way behind in my posting, just never enough hours in the day and so many other things keeping me too busy to blog so another catch up post here before I forget.

Last Thursday before spring break Maisie enjoyed a fun Easter lunch and egg hunt with all of her school mates.

IMG_3817eAfter lunch Sean, Maisie and Rylie waited patiently for the real fun to begin.

IMG_3838eLet the hunt begin.

IMG_3854eMaisie was discerning in the eggs she chose and really took her time only picking up the ones she wanted.

The picture below is from last years Easter egg hunt when Maisie was in first grade.  Notice anything similar?

IMG_6690[1] Yep, she’s wearing the same sweater and carrying the same basket.

IMG_0091 Though she didn’t wear the sweater the day of her Kindergarten Easter egg hunt she did have and wear the very same sweater she’s still wearing that year.  Here she is with her Kindergarten classmates with the same Easter basket she’s now carried three years running.

There’s a new recipe posted today on Cook Lisa Cook for Skinny Blueberry Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins.  I made these muffins for my Crazy Cooking Challenge as this month all the participating bloggers were challenged to find the ultimate blueberry muffin recipe.  I really wanted to participate in the challenge but as I’m anaphylaxis allergic to blueberries and Maisie has her food allergies and Eammon just really doesn’t need to be eating muffins, I decided to make these as a special treat for Maisie’s teacher Miss. Lisa.  Eammon did try one of the muffins as did my friend Sophie and it was thumbs up from both of them and Lisa on these muffins.  So if you’re looking to cut fat, calories or doing Weight Watchers, check this recipe out by clicking on the picture.

Meeting Winter

For Spring break Maisie and I were invited to travel down and stay in Naples, Florida with my friend Sophie and her children Brooke and Cole.  Maisie and Brooke are classmates at school and do some of their gymnastics practices together so the girls do well together and Maisie and Cole also get along great.  On our way down to Naples we spent two nights in Clearwater as the children wanted to meet Winter the dolphin from the movie Dolphin Tale.

photo e Once we made it to our hotel in Clearwater we were done being in the car so for dinner we walked over to the car themed restaurant across the parking lot.

Our stay in Clearwater was fun but then it was on the road again down to Naples.

At the restaurant we all had ribs and wings and sorry to say restaurant, your wings just didn’t cut it (and honestly neither did the ribs).  If you want to know some awesome, delicious wings, check out these Chinese Five Spice Wings.  Got to make them again one day soon as I’m craving some good wings.  Click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

Surgery scheduled

IMG_3802eEammon has been away on a business trip all week so Maisie and I went real gourmet with our meals.  Honestly she just hasn’t been feeling great and has mostly wanted Cheaters Chicken Soup with rice noodles but I wanted her to have something more substantial so she put in a request for hotdogs and beans.  So some Maisie “safe” all-beef hotdogs and beans it was and she was a happy little girl.

IMG_3807eFirst I want to say thank you to everyone for your comments here on the blog, on FB and in emails regarding the problems with Maisie’s congestion and sinuses.  This afternoon we met with the ENT surgeon and she feels that our first course of action is to remove Maisie’s adenoids, get a culture of the infection in her sinuses and flush her sinuses.  She explained that even though Maisie’s adenoids look okay, they can harbor a lot of bacteria which could be contributing to her ongoing sinus infections.  She also wants to get a culture of the infection so that the correct antibiotic can be determined and maybe the flush of her sinuses will allow them a clean start.  She’s not ruling out sinus surgery but she feels that this “easier” surgery followed by the hopefully correct antibiotic may clear Maisie’s problem.  Because this coming week is spring break, surgeries have long been scheduled for this week and as it’s not an emergency, Maisie will have her procedure the following week so please send lots of good thoughts and wishes her way, they’re much appreciated.

As I mentioned above, Maisie hasn’t felt like eating much lately but she’s been loving my Cheaters Chicken Soup so if you’re not feeling well and need a fast, easy and delicious soup, click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

Infected...even worse :-(

photo (1)e(The Maisie pictures in this post have nothing to do with the post, they’re all just cell phone pictures which I’ve been meaning to post.)

This has been like a never ending bad ride trying to get to the root of Maisie’s nasal congestion and trying to make her feel better.  Maisie is up every.single.night, often for a few hours at a time because she’s so congested she just can’t breathe through her nose at all.  She amazes me though, the fact that she keeps up with her heavy gymnastics schedule, continues to be an ‘A’ student at school and is an all around good kid…though she does have her moments, I’m honestly surprised that they’re as far and few between as they are.

Maisie has had congestion problems forever and has been on allergy meds since she was a baby.  Back in November, just before Thanksgiving we found out that Maisie had some food allergies to wheat, egg whites & diary so we completely removed those items from her diet and that helped significantly with the congestion that was “up front” in her nose.  Inside, her nose had always been wet looking and blue but after removing the problem foods from her diet her nose dried up and it was a healthy looking pink inside.  Though her nose dried up she still had congestion but it wasn’t until the Wednesday before Christmas when it got really bad and her sleep, or “lack of sleep” problems began.

photo (2)e Teammates, Tia, Maisie, Alyssa & Taylor

We visited Maisie’s Pediatrician the end of December and then because the meds she prescribed didn’t seem to help we had a return visit on January 20th.  The doctor was sort of at a loss as to what the problem was, thinking it may have been Maisie’s adenoids she sent her to an ENT.  Maisie saw the ENT on January 27th and he scoped her nose to find that her adenoids were small and perfect.  The ENT could hear Maisie’s congestions so he then sent us to an Allergist for further allergy testing.  That visit was on February 1st and Maisie was a trooper as they pricked her back and did the testing but no additional allergies were found.  The Allergist felt that it was a sinus problem so he arranged for Maisie to have a CAT scan which she had on February 8.  We had a follow-up visit with the Allergist on Valentine’s Day and with the CT scan results we found out that Maisie had a major infection in her sphenoid sinuses.  The doctor put her on a 28 day course of Augmentin and said that we should follow up with the ENT.  The Augmentin seemed to help a little, maybe 10%, so on March 16, three days after finishing the Augmentin Maisie returned to the ENT and he heard that she was still congested but he didn’t want her to have another CT scan so soon after finishing the antibiotic.  He put her on an antihistamine and a stronger nasal steroid and wanted to give that 30 days before doing a follow-up CT scan.

The follow up CT scan was scheduled for April 13th but each day since Maisie’s visit on March 16th I’ve noticed that Maisie’s congestion has gotten worse…and so has her sleep.  Monday I started calling the ENT’s office saying that she just couldn’t wait another three weeks for the CT scan and another week for the follow-up appointment, that it needed to be done ASAP.  I thankfully got through to a wonderful triage nurse, Shelley, who really helped me out.  After school today I took Maisie for her follow-up CAT scan.  We then took the disk of the scan down to Shelley at Children’s at Scottish Rite, the radiology place got a STAT report to her and she got the doctor to review everything.  From the time Maisie started her scan to Shelley calling me at home with the results was less than 2 hours.

photo (8)eLast Friday morning after practice Coach Hardy was chatting with us and Maisie decided that she wanted to snuggle into him, it was so cute I just had to snap a picture.  Maisie loves working with Coach Hardy.

Well I knew something was wrong and sure enough, the infection now is even worse than before she endured that course of Augmentin.  In fact it’s severe enough that they want Maisie to see a surgeon sooner than later.  They scheduled Maisie for an appointment on Friday with the surgeon and we’ll see what she has to say.  For now though the ENT has put Maisie 30 days of a new antibiotic, Omnicef and she’s back on a probiotic to help with the stomach side effects.  My poor little Maisie Miao Miao…now we wait to see what the surgeon says on Friday.

Maisie hasn’t wanted to eat much this week but last week she requested meatballs and I was happy to oblige.  These Baked Meatballs are Maisie’s favorite and the girl can easily down 6 to 8 at a go and I’m not even going to mention how many Eammon and I enjoy each time as these are really good.  Personally I enjoy a couple of them cold for breakfast but that’s my odd little thing.  Just click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

SEC Championship

photo eSaturday, Maisie and some of her gymnastics teammates had a grand time at the SEC Championship gymnastics meet.  The girls enjoyed being together, eating lots of treats, giggling, having five little bums squeezed into two seats, taking numerous trips to the restroom and even…watching some of the gymnastics.  Maisie decided that she wants to be a Gator and compete for Florida.  What did she base that on?  Well their capri warm-up pants and leotard of course!  At the end of the meet Maisie was delighted that “her” school won.

I noticed the other day that the fig tree in my neighbor’s yard was starting to leaf out so fig season isn’t far off, woohoo!  I can’t wait until we have both fresh figs and watermelon as I’m craving my Fig & Watermelon Salad, it’s been too long since I last enjoyed it.  Click on the picture for a great taste of summer.
