Dinner at the Diner

Last night we met up with Ilene, Michael and April for dinner at the Marietta Diner…home of MASSIVE portions!  Eammon and I haven’t been to the diner in years and I found the menu overwhelming with choices.  It was funny, I wanted so many things but I ended up ordering a cup of seafood bisque…yep just a cup of seafood bisque.  But that with a bit of Eammon’s giant side salad and a slice off the enormous entire loaf of bread that they brought to the table along with a square of the complimentary spanakopita, well I was stuffed.  Everyone else ordered whole meals and at the end of dinner there were a total of seven stuffed take-out boxes heading home with all of us.  Portions out-of-control!!

photo (3)eAs always April and Maisie were excited and happy to be together.  We don’t get together enough and each time that we do the girls look so much older and grown up.

Both the girls ordered spaghetti for dinner but they each had their own eating style.

photo (4)eMaisie is a slurp from the bowl kind of girl.

Rock the Mock

The announcement at the beginning of the meet told us that the Judges would be taking maximum deductions so that the girls would really know where they stood and what needed to be worked on. Maisie was calm as ever as she loves going to the meets and enjoys the entire process.  Me though, well that’s a different story and I didn’t know what to expect or how she would do at each event.  Even though this was only a mock meet my heart was still in my throat as I sat up in the gallery with the other parents…sweating because it was hot as Hades up there and hoping that all the girls did well.  It was a combined USA Level 3 & 4 meet so I was trying to watch everything and everyone because I know so many of the girls and want them all to do well.

As I don’t have the right lens on my camera to take good pictures during a meet and I decided not to bring my Flip, I just sat and enjoyed watching.  Before the meet began I did snap a couple of pictures though.

Maisie and all the girls did their best and handled themselves so well.  This was great practice for when their actual competitions begin, just three weeks away!

IMG_9359eMaisie did great at the meet scoring a 9.6 on vault, 9.4 on bars, 9.4 on beam and a 9.0 on floor.  I’m hoping that competition season goes this well because all 9’s or better totally rocks!!!

Though I didn’t video the meet yesterday, I did capture part of her practice last week and below are those videos.

A-Maisie-ing Maisie, Rock the House and good luck this year competing!!

Not as amazing as my Maisie but still pretty darn incredible are my Red Chinese Long Beans with Peppers & Red Curry, my newest recipe over on Cook Lisa CookIMG_9043e

Mock Meet

In preparation for competition season Maisie has a mock meet this afternoon at her gym.  The girls all need to have their hair pulled back into a bun as if they were at a real meet so that any potential hair problems can be worked out.  They won’t be wearing their competition leotards today but instead they’ll all wear their matching zebra leotards from team camp.  The meet will run just like an a real meet with the girls all receiving real scores.

Maisie’s looking forward to this afternoon as she has a lot of fun being with her teammates and competing.  I said to Eammon this morning that for us, the most difficult part of any meet is getting Maisie’s hair done as I’m not good at doing it and she really doesn’t like having her hair up or especially having hair spray applied.

IMG_9318eTrying to get Maisie’s hair pulled back.

IMG_9321eIt’s pretty wonky as I’m so-not good at the hair thing but she’s still stinkin’ adorable and at least all the hair is pulled back so that it won’t be in her face.

I may not be good at hair but I’m pretty good at cooking so if you want to see where my true talents are, check out Cook Lisa Cook and all the delicious recipes I have posted including these recent ones:  Mango Lassi, Stir-Fried Asparagus with Water Chestnuts, Ginger & Cashews, Curried Roast Chicken Pieces with Spicy Sweet Potato & Carrots, Grilled Corn & Bacon Pudding, Oriental Chicken Salad, Potato Salad with Bacon, Coffee Crusted Steak, Home Style Chicken Curry, Watermelon FrostyMango Gazpacho, Toll House Double Stuff Oreo Brownies, Long Beans with Walnuts, Blacksmith Pizza, Rhubarb Crisp, Laksa, Math Book No Bake Cookies, Aloo Gobi, Mint Lassi, Red Curry Chicken, Lamb Curry, Grilled Corn, Avocado & Tomato Salad with Honey Lime Dressing, Baked Egg Cups Two Ways, Thai Peanut Salad, Holy Guacamole, Cantaloupe Agua Fresca, Wallaby Darned, Piggy-Out Cookies, Wicked Good New England Lobster Roll, Long Beans with Garlic, Super Simple Summer Shrimp Salsa Salad, Grandma’s Teriyaki Steak & Watermelon Tomato Gazpacho.

First Watermelon of the Season

Sunday night Steve and I picked from our garden, our first watermelon of the season.

IMG_9262eSteve cradling his homegrown baby.

IMG_9260e It was just a wee little beauty, weighing in at 23.8 pounds!

IMG_9263eBeautiful on the inside too.

We each took home half a melon but we’d better eat up quickly as our watermelons are doing really well this year so we should be picking another one very soon.

IMG_8415e I’m excited and planning on lots of Watermelon Frosty drinks as well as…

IMG_2006 Watermelon Tomato Gazpacho which is what I made with this melon.

A family can’t live on watermelon alone so to see what else were enjoying head on over to Cook Lisa Cook and check out my recent recipes including: Mango Lassi, Stir-Fried Asparagus with Water Chestnuts, Ginger & Cashews, Curried Roast Chicken Pieces with Spicy Sweet Potato & Carrots, Grilled Corn & Bacon Pudding, Oriental Chicken Salad, Potato Salad with Bacon, Coffee Crusted Steak, Home Style Chicken Curry, Watermelon FrostyMango Gazpacho, Toll House Double Stuff Oreo Brownies, Long Beans with Walnuts, Blacksmith Pizza, Rhubarb Crisp, Laksa, Math Book No Bake Cookies, Aloo Gobi, Mint Lassi, Red Curry Chicken, Lamb Curry, Grilled Corn, Avocado & Tomato Salad with Honey Lime Dressing, Baked Egg Cups Two Ways, Thai Peanut Salad, Holy Guacamole, Cantaloupe Agua Fresca, Wallaby Darned, Piggy-Out Cookies, Wicked Good New England Lobster Roll, Long Beans with Garlic, Super Simple Summer Shrimp Salsa Salad.

Enjoying Grandma’s Teriyaki Steak

IMG_9275e Maisie is my carb loving gal but lately she’s been asking for steak.  Steak for dinner, steak for lunch and even steak for breakfast.  I’m happy to oblige as getting protein into her can often be a challenge so while she’s all about the steak, I’m all about feeding it to her.

The other night I made a Teriyaki marinade that my Mother has made since I was a little girl and it’s always been a favorite.  I use my version of my Mom’s recipe all the time and both Eammon and I love it so I hoped that Maisie would enjoy it too.

IMG_9257eI served Maisie a jacket potato with butter, Roasted Enoki and a good serving of steak.  Other than the jacket of the potato Maisie ate everything on this plate and then asked for and ate seconds and then thirds of the steak.  While eating her first serving she asked me where I got such a good recipe and I told her that it was Grandma’s recipe and that when I was a little girl she made this for me.  Maisie then let me know that Grandma was a good cook!

IMG_9246eThis marinade is delicious, shoot I’ve been eating it for a lifetime!  If you’d like to try it out check out the recipe for Grandma’s Teriyaki Steak over on Cook Lisa Cook.

More wonderful recipes can also be found there including:: Mango Lassi, Stir-Fried Asparagus with Water Chestnuts, Ginger & Cashews, Curried Roast Chicken Pieces with Spicy Sweet Potato & Carrots, Grilled Corn & Bacon Pudding, Oriental Chicken Salad, Potato Salad with Bacon, Coffee Crusted Steak, Home Style Chicken Curry, Watermelon FrostyMango Gazpacho, Toll House Double Stuff Oreo Brownies, Long Beans with Walnuts, Blacksmith Pizza, Rhubarb Crisp, Laksa, Math Book No Bake Cookies, Aloo Gobi, Mint Lassi, Red Curry Chicken, Lamb Curry, Grilled Corn, Avocado & Tomato Salad with Honey Lime Dressing, Baked Egg Cups Two Ways, Thai Peanut Salad, Holy Guacamole, Cantaloupe Agua Fresca, Wallaby Darned, Piggy-Out Cookies, Wicked Good New England Lobster Roll, Long Beans with Garlic and Super Simple Summer Shrimp Salsa Salad and Roasted Enoki.

Holy Wasabi Batman!

IMG_9277eI knew when I saw these that I shouldn’t buy them but even as my head said no, because I knew, just knew that I would become addicted, the draw of wasabi was too much for my hands to resist. Unfortunately the draw of wasabi is also too much for my mouth to resist as these chips are off the chart crazy, spicy, wonderful and we just can’t seem to stop eating them.  It figures too that I didn’t buy them in a normal sized bag…Oh NO, I bought them at Costco in the feed-a-family-of-20 sized bag so we’ve been munching non-stop for days!

Thankfully we are eating things other than chips as I’ve been cooking, cooking and cooking lately.  Also thankful is that I’ve been cooking things that are considerably healthier than these chips like my new recipe for Roasted Enoki…DELISH!!IMG_9236eSo if you’re hungry for something other than chips check out my new recipe for Roasted Enoki on Cook Lisa Cook as well as other delicious recipes including: Mango Lassi, Stir-Fried Asparagus with Water Chestnuts, Ginger & Cashews, Curried Roast Chicken Pieces with Spicy Sweet Potato & Carrots, Grilled Corn & Bacon Pudding, Oriental Chicken Salad, Potato Salad with Bacon, Coffee Crusted Steak, Home Style Chicken Curry, Watermelon FrostyMango Gazpacho, Toll House Double Stuff Oreo Brownies, Long Beans with Walnuts, Blacksmith Pizza, Rhubarb Crisp, Laksa, Math Book No Bake Cookies, Aloo Gobi, Mint Lassi, Red Curry Chicken, Lamb Curry, Grilled Corn, Avocado & Tomato Salad with Honey Lime Dressing, Baked Egg Cups Two Ways, Thai Peanut Salad, Holy Guacamole, Cantaloupe Agua Fresca, Wallaby Darned, Piggy-Out Cookies, Wicked Good New England Lobster Roll, Long Beans with Garlic and Super Simple Summer Shrimp Salsa Salad.

Communication 101

Many days Eammon works from home and though he’s in the house, Maisie and I can go the entire day without seeing or talking with him.  Eammon will be busy and involved up in his office and Maisie and I will be in and out with our activities and projects .  When Eammon does emerge from his office he’s generally looking for lunch or dinner but when he opens the fridge he’s often not sure what he should eat.  He knows that sometimes things are prepped to be used in recipes or prepared for something we’re attending or for someone else.  So to help Eammon out as most of these times Maisie and I aren’t home, sticky notes have become common place in our house.

IMG_9184eOn days when Maisie has gymnastics practice she and I don’t get home until right about seven and depending on Eammon’s meeting schedule he’ll often need to have dinner before we arrive home so if I don’t leave a prepared plate on the table I’m sure to leave a note on the front of the fridge.

IMG_9185eAnd then one on the actual food because Eammon can be lost in thought of what he’s working on and instead of eating the shrimp salad from the bowl on the bottom shelf, he’ll eat a bowl of leftover Bolognese sauce from the middle shelf and not even notice the difference.  Of course the Bolognese would have been delicious but as he had eaten it the night before, I thought something new and different would be welcome and enjoyable for him.

IMG_9177eIf he had eaten that leftover Bolognese sauce or something else, see what he would have missed out on, a totally delicious and fresh Shrimp Salad.  I hope that seeing this has you wanting some too so I have posted over on Cook Lisa Cook the recipe for this Super Simple Summer Shrimp Salsa Salad.  I hope that you’ll make and enjoy this salad as it’s a perfect no-cook meal on a hot summer night.

While you’re visiting Cook Lisa Cook please check out some of my other recent recipes including: Mango Lassi, Stir-Fried Asparagus with Water Chestnuts, Ginger & Cashews, Curried Roast Chicken Pieces with Spicy Sweet Potato & Carrots, Grilled Corn & Bacon Pudding, Oriental Chicken Salad, Potato Salad with Bacon, Coffee Crusted Steak, Home Style Chicken Curry, Watermelon FrostyMango Gazpacho, Toll House Double Stuff Oreo Brownies, Long Beans with Walnuts, Blacksmith Pizza, Rhubarb Crisp, Laksa, Math Book No Bake Cookies, Aloo Gobi, Mint Lassi, Red Curry Chicken, Lamb Curry, Grilled Corn, Avocado & Tomato Salad with Honey Lime Dressing, Baked Egg Cups Two Ways, Thai Peanut Salad, Holy Guacamole, Cantaloupe Agua Fresca, Wallaby Darned, Piggy-Out Cookies, Wicked Good New England Lobster Roll and Long Beans with Garlic.

Who let the girls out?

Maisie awoke feeling not 100% but okay this morning and she wanted to attend her make-up gymnastics practice.  We also had tentative plans for Aspen to come and play after their practice and Maisie definitely didn’t want to miss out on having her friend over.  The girls had a good and long practice but they were still full of energy when we arrived back at the house.

IMG_9188eThe girls ran around the house for a bit and then decided to play Just Dance on the Wii.

IMG_9191eThey danced over and over to their favorite songs giggling and being silly the entire time.

IMG_9194eAfter all their dancing they decided to relax and play in the pool.

IMG_9201eFollowed by a nice cold snack in the shade.

IMG_9206eThen before dinner the two gymnasts watched part of a movie the way you’d expect two gymnasts to watch a movie, upside-down.

It was a fun afternoon for the girls and they enjoyed their time together.

Though I cooked the entire time that the girls were playing I’ll have to post those recipes another day because I have not been sleeping and it’s all caught up with me so I’m off to bed early tonight and will hopefully sleep.  If you want some wonderful and delicious recipes check out some of my recent posts on Cook Lisa Cook: Mango Lassi, Stir-Fried Asparagus with Water Chestnuts, Ginger & Cashews, Curried Roast Chicken Pieces with Spicy Sweet Potato & Carrots, Grilled Corn & Bacon Pudding, Oriental Chicken Salad, Potato Salad with Bacon, Coffee Crusted Steak, Home Style Chicken Curry, Watermelon FrostyMango Gazpacho, Toll House Double Stuff Oreo Brownies, Long Beans with Walnuts, Blacksmith Pizza, Rhubarb Crisp, Laksa, Math Book No Bake Cookies, Aloo Gobi, Mint Lassi, Red Curry Chicken, Lamb Curry, Grilled Corn, Avocado & Tomato Salad with Honey Lime Dressing, Baked Egg Cups Two Ways, Thai Peanut Salad, Holy Guacamole, Cantaloupe Agua Fresca, Wallaby Darned, Piggy-Out Cookies and Wicked Good New England Lobster Roll.

Spotty girl

Maisie can be one funny little girl and the other night she decided that she wanted to be a spotty girl so she covered herself with dozens of little stickers.

IMG_9082eI had no problem with her doing this nor did I have a problem with her wanting to wear her spots when we went out for dinner.  Eammon wasn’t so sure about her keeping her spots on outside of the house but when you’re five things like wearing dress-up clothes, Princess gowns, tiaras or even sporting dozens of spots hardly garners a second look and generally just makes people smile.

IMG_9079eOf course she was also sporting blue lips from a Fun Dip but as she was covered with so many stickers I doubt that anyone noticed and if they did, it just added to the charm.

Today my always-up-by-7am girl actually slept until 9:10 so I knew that something was up with her and not in a good way.  She seemed okay during the morning playing outside for a bit with K & A and then we had to go to her gym as she had tryouts for a special team.  Maisie happily did the tryouts but I could tell that she just wasn’t quite right and definitely not at 100%.  After the tryouts she said that her throat was hurting so I asked if she wanted to go home but she said that she wanted to attend her regular practice.  As I couldn’t see anything red or wrong with her throat and she wasn’t running a fever I went along with what she wanted.  We had an hour off before her regular practice so we went out for a quick lunch and then returned to the gym.  I left her there for her 3 hours letting her coaches know that if needed, to call and I’d pick her up early but she stayed the entire practice and her coaches said that she did fine during practice.  Once home Maisie ate her dinner and enjoyed an extra long bubble bath followed by some playtime but something isn’t right and I’m hoping that it’s not strep again because once this summer was more than enough.  I’m hoping that when she wakes tomorrow she’ll feel perfect!

Also perfect is a wonderful new recipe for a Wicked Good New England Lobster Roll which I posted over on Cook Lisa Cook and I’d love for you to click on over and check it out.IMG_8960e12While you’re there, check out some of my other recent recipes posted on Cook Lisa Cook including: Mango Lassi, Stir-Fried Asparagus with Water Chestnuts, Ginger & Cashews, Curried Roast Chicken Pieces with Spicy Sweet Potato & Carrots, Grilled Corn & Bacon Pudding, Oriental Chicken Salad, Potato Salad with Bacon, Coffee Crusted Steak, Home Style Chicken Curry, Watermelon FrostyMango Gazpacho, Toll House Double Stuff Oreo Brownies, Long Beans with Walnuts, Blacksmith Pizza, Rhubarb Crisp, Laksa, Math Book No Bake Cookies, Aloo Gobi, Mint Lassi, Red Curry Chicken, Lamb Curry, Grilled Corn, Avocado & Tomato Salad with Honey Lime Dressing, Baked Egg Cups Two Ways, Thai Peanut Salad, Holy Guacamole, Cantaloupe Agua Fresca, Wallaby Darned and Piggy-Out Cookies.

Piggy-Out

Maisie and I were in the kitchen cooking again, this time making cookies which contained…are you ready for this…

IMG_8731BACON!!!  Imagine it, a chocolate chip cookie with peanut butter and bacon…Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Clause…I believe!!…Hallelujah!!…these cookies were outrageously good!!   I guess you can tell that we were head-over-heels for these cookies and we totally pigged-out on Piggy-Out Cookies

IMG_8738eI didn’t notice this until I uploaded my pictures but check out that cookie on the right, doesn’t that just look like a cute little piggy face?   As cute as it was, it didn’t stop me from biting into it as we gobbled these down.

If you’ve noticed lately the trend in adding bacon to sweet foods and you’ve been like me, wondering “WHY???” Or you haven’t heard boo about bacon in sweet foods all I can say is make these cookies and you’ll be looking to add bacon to all your sweet treats.  The recipe is super easy and beyond delish so check out Piggy-Out Cookies over on Cook Lisa Cook.

While you’re there, visit some of my other recipes including these recent ones: Mango Lassi, Stir-Fried Asparagus with Water Chestnuts, Ginger & Cashews, Curried Roast Chicken Pieces with Spicy Sweet Potato & Carrots, Grilled Corn & Bacon Pudding, Oriental Chicken Salad, Potato Salad with Bacon, Coffee Crusted Steak, Home Style Chicken Curry, Watermelon FrostyMango Gazpacho, Toll House Double Stuff Oreo Brownies, Long Beans with Walnuts, Blacksmith Pizza, Rhubarb Crisp, Laksa, Math Book No Bake Cookies, Aloo Gobi, Mint Lassi, Red Curry Chicken, Lamb Curry, Grilled Corn, Avocado & Tomato Salad with Honey Lime Dressing, Baked Egg Cups Two Ways, Thai Peanut Salad, Holy Guacamole, Cantaloupe Agua Fresca, Wallaby Darned.

I finally remembered

Two weeks ago I posted that Maisie had her mill circle and promised that I would take my video camera to the gym to capture it but each and every time we've gone to the gym, I've forgotten. I think I'm losing my mind between forgetting to feed the poor girl and my camera…and often forgetting my phone too…old age is setting in!

The mill circle is the “big” move on the bars that the USA Level 3 girls need to be able to perform and Maisie is rocking them out, just needing a bit of polish.

bars e I watch the video and Maisie at the gym and I can’t believe how high she casts for her back hip circle, the girl seems to fly around the bar yet has the control and strength to stop herself and not fly off or back around.

There’s still a month until competition season starts so the little flaws and forgotten arm & hand movements still have time to be worked on but I’m so proud of my amazing Maisie Miao Miao as she’s doing such a wonderful job and this routine is looking so good already.

Maisie eThis is just a snapshot from the video and it’s blurry but I see this move all.the.time as Maisie’s always practicing her round-off.

Untitled 0 00 25-11 e1Another blurry video snapshot but the girl is learning to fly.

Maisie’s beam routine is looking pretty good too and once she has her dismount a bit stronger, she’ll have a solid and strong routine.

beam eHow she always lands on the beam is beyond me, I can’t even walk the darn thing but she split jumps with ease.

Because Maisie’s practices are three hours long and I don’t hang out at the gym and vault is done in the middle of their practice, I have yet to see her vault.  Her coaches say that she is solid-solid on it so I can’t wait to see it when she competes.

Today I posted a tipsy little drink recipe over on Cook Lisa Cook for a copycat of Outback Steakhouse’s Wallaby Darnedwallaby darnedI’m not sure if it’s good or bad that I have absolutely zero alcohol tolerance because this drink is over-the-top delicious and if I could, I would drink this all.the.time!!  As it is, I can only taste a teaspoon or two before feeling tipsy so I stick with my Watermelon Frosty, Mango Lassi, Mint Lassi and Cantaloupe Agua Fresca and let Eammon enjoy this one all on his own.  Stumble on over to Cook Lisa Cook for the recipe so that you too can also enjoy this wonderful tipsy drink.

Other recent recipes posted on Cook Lisa Cook: Mango Lassi, Stir-Fried Asparagus with Water Chestnuts, Ginger & Cashews, Curried Roast Chicken Pieces with Spicy Sweet Potato & Carrots, Grilled Corn & Bacon Pudding, Oriental Chicken Salad, Potato Salad with Bacon, Coffee Crusted Steak, Home Style Chicken Curry, Watermelon FrostyMango Gazpacho, Toll House Double Stuff Oreo Brownies, Long Beans with Walnuts, Blacksmith Pizza, Rhubarb Crisp, Laksa, Math Book No Bake Cookies, Aloo Gobi, Mint Lassi, Red Curry Chicken, Lamb Curry, Grilled Corn, Avocado & Tomato Salad with Honey Lime Dressing, Baked Egg Cups Two Ways, Thai Peanut Salad, Holy Guacamole and Cantaloupe Agua Fresca.

What about some lunch?

If you’ve followed this blog at all or seen my Cook Lisa Cook blog, you know that I do a lot of cooking.  Then how is it that I could forget to feed my little Maisie Miao Miao?

IMG_9089eSaturday morning I made a nice breakfast for Eammon and Maisie of coddled eggs and bacon.  I then got busy running around and doing some chores in the house and minutes before we were ready to walk out the door for a play date with Aspen, Maisie asked if I was going to feed her lunch.  OY, it was 1:10 and though I knew the time, I just never noticed that I didn’t offer or serve lunch to any of us.  Trust me when I say that missing a meal in this house is not something that happens as we enjoy our food and love to eat.  I asked Maisie what she wanted to eat and she was a happy little girl when I agreed that a lunch of crackers and brie was okay.  Maisie definitely takes after me as I could make a meal out of crackers and cheese any day of the week.

Even though I forgot to feed my daughter, I did manage a new recipe over on Cook Lisa Cook for Cantaloupe Agua Fresca.cantaloupe agua frescaThis drink is healthy and delicious and isn’t the color just gorgeous!  I adore fruit drinks as they’re cool and refreshing, perfect on a hot summer day and also a great way to get some extra no-sugar-added fruit into a wee one.  Head on over to Cook Lisa Cook for the easy-peasy recipe.

While you’re there, check out some of my other recently posted recipes: Mango Lassi, Stir-Fried Asparagus with Water Chestnuts, Ginger & Cashews, Curried Roast Chicken Pieces with Spicy Sweet Potato & Carrots, Grilled Corn & Bacon Pudding, Oriental Chicken Salad, Potato Salad with Bacon, Coffee Crusted Steak, Home Style Chicken Curry, Watermelon FrostyMango Gazpacho, Toll House Double Stuff Oreo Brownies, Long Beans with Walnuts, Blacksmith Pizza, Rhubarb Crisp, Laksa, Math Book No Bake Cookies, Aloo Gobi, Mint Lassi, Red Curry Chicken, Lamb Curry, Grilled Corn, Avocado & Tomato Salad with Honey Lime Dressing, Baked Egg Cups Two Ways, Thai Peanut Salad, Holy Guacamole.
