Malmö Sweden

IMG_4230eAfter two wonderful weeks our cruise came to an end in Copenhagen.  We quickly settled into our hotel and took a brief one hour nap as we were all exhausted from staying up until after midnight the previous night chatting with friends and saying last goodbyes.  Though still very tired we then met up with Cecily & her parents and we took the train over the Öresund Bridge to Malmö, Sweden.  The weather was a little overcast but it was nice to walk around the city for a couple of hours and see some of the sights.

IMG_4246eRådhuset (The Town Hall) was originally built in 1546, but has been altered several times. The facade got its today's appearance - in Dutch Renaissance style - in 1864-69.

IMG_4235eIMG_4243eThe tall brick building on the left is Apoteket Lejonet (The Pharmacy "The Lion")  John Tesch, the owner of Malmö´s oldest pharmacy, (founded in 1571), moved his business and private residence into this building, which was raised in German Neo-Renaissance style in 1898. The interior is in Neo-Gothic style.

IMG_4245eYes I took a picture of a manhole cover…it’s a lot better than the pee-station picture in my Amsterdam post  ;-)

IMG_4250eOptimistorkestern (Optimistic Orchestra) created by Yngve Lundell.  The sculpture is intended to express the mood of Malmö: upbeat, confident, happy, and basically, optimistic.  Maisie on the other hand was less than happy to have her picture taken.

IMG_4256eWe then wandered into Lilla Torg, a quaint square which was built in 1590.  The square has always been a marketplace for small square trade. Up until 1900 there was an estate with shops where Lilla Torg is today but the estate was demolished and a market hall was built that stood there until 1968. Today the square looks like it did originally, with cobblestones and surrounded by old houses.  There were dozens of restaurants so we sat outside and enjoyed a nice lunch.

IMG_4255eFaxeska gården, a burghers' house in half-timbered style from 1760s. It was renovated in 1910 by the architect August Stoltz.

IMG_4261e After lunch we just strolled around stopping in various shops and tried coaxing the girls into allowing some pictures.  Needless to say, Maisie wasn’t in the mood.

IMG_4262eIMG_4264eIMG_4266e We ended our day in Malmö in a little coffee shop where we enjoyed a little pastry and some cappuccino.  Then we headed back to the train station and Copenhagen.

Our lunch in Malmö was at a small Indian restaurant in Lilla Torg and the food was delicious but then again, I always love good Indian food like my Lamb Curry.  If you’re craving a good curry, click on the link or the picture to be taken to the recipe.

  2. I love seeing your pictures as I'm fairly certain that Sweden is not on our list of places to visit.

  3. My grandpa was born in Malmo, Sweden in 1898. He He came to America when he was 5. My parents went there but didn't take pictures. My mom says it is because she is old and doesn't know how anymore. I was sad. So THANKS! for these pictures and the info. It was so great to see and learn a bit!
