Surgery #2

IMG_4947eMaisie started her day today with a breakfast of Jello & Popsicles as she was only allowed clear liquids after midnight and up until four hours prior to her scheduled surgery time.

photo (4)e Back in April Maisie had her adenoids removed and the doctor also went into the sinuses she could, without doing any cutting, and checked & flushed the sinuses and took cultures.  Unfortunately all the cleaning out and even Maisie’s 90 days of antibiotics didn’t help with her congestion so it was decided that a second surgery was needed to get back to the sinuses where cutting was required and that’s what Maisie had done today.  Maisie and I arrived at the hospital just before 10:30am and it wasn’t long before we were back in her room.  Maisie was a hoot when they gave her the “happy juice,” she was talking about inferences and conclusions and giving examples using some of the things in the room.

photo (8)eHer surgery was almost three hours and though I don’t have all the names of the procedures, they basically went in and got to all of her sinuses, cleared them out and enlarged the natural openings.  Hopefully this will allow them to drain properly from here on out and no more surgeries.

Once again Maisie had a real rough time coming out of the anesthesia, both with the sleepiness and the nausea but she was able to eat the cherry icee that they gave her as well as most of a Popsicle.  By the time we made it home it was a little past 8PM, so a long day.  Poor little Maisie though, as soon as we stepped in the house she started vomiting and just felt horrible.  She laid for a bit in the family room watching TV and then she wanted to get in my bed…and started throwing up again.  Thankfully both times she used an emesis bag (love these instead of a bucket) so no mess to clean up.  To Maisie, throwing up is one of the worst things so she was quite distressed but Eammon was able to get her to sleep after the episode in bed.  She then awoke about an hour later, feeling considerably better and asking to eat.  She’s now laying in my bed eating some cereal which will hopefully stay in her.  Now we are keeping our fingers crossed that this surgery resolves her sinus issues and that she’ll be breathing freely from now on.

Though I didn’t cook anything today, a new recipe did post over on Cook Lisa Cook as today was my post day for the Improv Cooking Challenge.  This month the participating bloggers were challenged to make any recipe of their choosing as long as they used the two required ingredients which this month were corn & butter.  I struggled this month coming up with what I wanted to make but in the end created a wonderful Fritos Crusted Pollock which was a big hit with all of us.  Click on either the link or the picture to be taken to the recipe.

  1. Poor Maisie, she's gone through a lot to clear those sinuses. I SO hope this works for her. And I'm sorry she felt so sick afterward. That is miserable (for everyone). Hopefully she will sleep through the rest of the night and wake up much better in the morning.

I've never even heard of those vomit bags before.

  2. Hm, came here to see how Maisie is doing and just spent a few mins reading about those bags. Huh, who knew?

Big hugs to all and hoping you see remarkable improvement soon.

Bless her little heart, I hope she's back to herself quickly and that this last surgery takes care of it.

I know it's too late and I hope you don't need this info for the future, but I always tell the anesthesiologist that I get nausea after surgery, so I get a combo of something in my IV to prevent it, a patch behind my ear that lasts for three days, and a prescription for Zofran. The combo of the three of them works wonders! I hope poor Maisie doesn't have to deal with that again, but being in pain from surgery is rough enough with out adding being sick to it! I'm crossing my fingers that this is the key to her feeling better, she really is a trooper!

    1. Shauna, I did inform the anesthesiologist and he did give Maisie extra anti-nausea meds in the OR and Zofran through her IV but even with all that she still got sick. Honestly though, once she threw it all up and got a bit of sleep she was feeling 100 times better.
